Director of People & Culture (a/k/a Human Resources Manager)

We are a 43-person business law firm with offices in Indianapolis and Bloomington. We have 24 lawyers, 19 staff, a strong culture, and an HR function that has been run largely on instinct and goodwill. Both have served us well. We have outgrown them.

We are looking for an HR Manager who wants to build something — not maintain a system someone else designed, but create the infrastructure a firm like ours needs to keep growing without losing what makes it good.

Our culture is built around two ideas: quality law and quality life. We take both seriously. This role is central to making sure we keep delivering on both as we scale.

What the job actually is

You will be the firm's first dedicated HR professional. That means you will design and run benefits administration, hiring, onboarding, offboarding, performance systems, handbook policy, compliance, and PTO tracking. You will also serve as a thought partner to firm leadership on people strategy, coach managers on giving feedback and setting expectations, and help us build the kind of leadership infrastructure that lets a 43-person firm operate like a 60-person firm.

This is not a support role. It is a builder role with a seat at the table.

What we are looking for

Five or more years of progressive HR experience, preferably in professional services. Strong process discipline and systems orientation. Sound judgment and high discretion. The ability to hold people accountable without losing their trust. SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred but not required if your experience speaks for itself.

The details

Full-time, in-office role based in Indianapolis, with one day per week in Bloomington. Salary range $100,000 to $110,000, commensurate with experience. Full benefits package. Parking and mileage between offices reimbursed.
